New York City had the highest number of people reporting as black at around 2.3 million, followed by Chicago, 1.1 million, and Detroit, Philadelphia and Houston, which had between 500, 000 and 1 million each. Cities where people who are only black do not represent at least 30% of the population, while people who are black alone or, in combination with another race, make up at least 30% of the population, appear in italics. It may not surprise you that almost every city is located in the southern states, but it's interesting that many of the country's largest cities aren't on the list.
